Smurf (Ellen Barkin), the family matriarch; Baz (Scott Speedman), her right-hand man and consignee; her sons Pope (Shawn Hatosy), Craig (Ben Robson), and Deran (Jake Weary), as well as Janine “J” and Joshua “Josh,” the offspring of Pope and Craig, are all introduced in the first season (Moses Jacob Storm). Once J’s mother, a Smurf’s daughter, passes away, the family takes J in.
In order to retain their dominance amid shifting allegiances within Southern California’s criminal underground, the family engages in a variety of unlawful operations, with a focus on theft, armed robbery, protection rackets, and drug trafficking. The show also focuses on J’s adaptation to life in the Cody household as he struggles to choose between his birth family and the only family he has.
